I haven't owned a pair of Sambas in forever, but (like everyone else I know) there was a good four-year stretch where they were the only shoe I owned. As in, one pair lasted me four years. Good times.

Onitsuka Tiger's Mexico 66 in a new slimmer "DX" version. Notice that the Samba above also appears to have the Mexico 66's trademark "X" detailing on the heel.

As with so many things on this blog, a shameless self-promotion: I've been getting a lot of comments on my Swear Jimmy oxfords. It really is a beautiful shoe and I would seriously consider getting another pair.

While I’m on the subject, the Coolhunter has a feature on premium shoe stores. The only one I recognize is Wish in Atlanta, pictured above. (Complex recently interviewed Wish GM Frank Cooke.) Now that I think of it, Wish looks a bit like NYC’s Alife Rivington Club. Nike’s 21 Mercer and DQM hold their own as well, but I still think that Wish sets the standard for concept-y retail. (While I was in Beijing, I scoped out Deal and the Source, but I never made it to Mess.)

Opening Ceremony Fall/Winter 2010

Opening Ceremony posted its Fall/Winter 2010 menswear lookbook last week.

These are just a few of my favorite selections from this a solid showing from the venerable brand/store. The two installments of this collection are inspired by the French and the English, respectively, all executed in a trademark modern cut with the finest materials.

The model looks a bit too surly for his own good—I want to fight him and steal his clothes.

Another strong showing from Japan’s answer to Gap. Some of the pieces are rather effete, but the clean lines and slim fit strike a perfect balance between classicism and modernism.

Helm Handmade Boots

Helm is a leather goods label based in Austin, TX. Their boots, belts and bags are hand-crafted by “artisans in Istanbul” from carefully sourced premium materials.

The emphasis on quality—nice but unremarkable in itself—is matched by impeccable attention to detail in terms of design: all of the boots capture a refined American West-meets-Europe sensibility to achieve an aesthetic that is both timeless and fashion-forward. (My namesake, a style called the Ray Ray, pictured above, happens to be my favorite one.) These reference points are reflected in Helm’s current stockists in Austin and Denmark; NYC in early next year.

Also, is it just me, or does the “Emi” silhouette (above) look like the Rustic Blazer Mid’s (below) classier big brother? I can’t say I love the Emi; the contrast paneling, which vaguely looks like a filled-in swoosh, just doesn’t do it for me, and I find the sloping of the upper (along the laces) a tad effete, though I do like the cleaner look afforded by the lack of a second seam there. Let’s just say that Helm is better at dressing down formalwear than dressing up streetwear—leave that to Y-3.
